Stephen
Spielberg has directed and produced an overwhelming number of major box
office hits, giving him an enormous influence in Hollywood. In fact in
2005 Empire magazine, Spielberg ranked at the top on the list of fifty
greatest film directors of all time. Born to a Jewish family in Cincinnati
on 18, December 1946, is presently married to the Indiana Jones actress
Kate Capshaw and has seven children.
Spielberg’s movies are not just a movie but have thought
provoking themes, bringing into focus emotionally powerful issues like the
holocaust in Schindlers List. On the other hand, there are films like
Close Encounters of the Third kind, E.T the Extra Terrestrial, Hook and
A.I portrays his sensitivity to the wonderment of children.
By 1980’s Stephen Spielberg already had Hollywood under with huge
box office hits like Indiana Jones and Raider’s of the Lost Ark, the
latter is still regarded as a landmark in action cinema. The film
Schindler’s List saw him getting tremendous critical acclaim which was
based on a true story about the horrors of holocaust. For this outstanding
movie won Academy Award for Best Directing, the proceeds of box office hit
from this film went to Shoah Foundation of which he’s a member.
Also recent films of Spielberg show an inclination towards
experimentation. A departure is noticed from his earlier version of aliens
as friends of human beings. His most recent movie, War of the Worlds has
leanings towards violent invaders that create havoc on earth. As one
observes Spielberg’s films, we notice that most deals with either
ordinary human being coming in contact with extra ordinary being and
circumstances or the losing of
innocence like Empire of the Sun and Catch Me If You Can.
Spielberg also was quite affected by his parents early divorce;
thus films like Hook, the character dedicated only to his work, Minority
Report where the father is shattered by the disappearance of his son etc.
portrays his leanings towards family issues. Winner of two Oscars in
directing, Spielberg continues to make thought provoking films and ranks
among the most financially successful motion picture directors of all
time.
